For more than 50 years, AJFC has been a trusted resource for helping people find their way out of poverty.
AJFC Community Action, Inc. (AJFC) was chartered by the State of Mississippi as a private non-profit corporation, Adams Jefferson Improvement Corporation (AJIC), to meet the requirements of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, in August 1966. It acquired 501(c)3 status from the Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit corporation in 1967.
Initially, AJIC served just Adams and Jefferson counties. In 1967 it began providing HEAD START services in Amite, Pike, and Wilkinson counties (Pike County was later dropped). In January 1978, the name changed to AJFC Community Action Agency, Inc. with services expanding to Claiborne and Franklin counties. In January of 1982 services were extended to Lawrence and Lincoln counties and to Copiah County in 1983. Presently, we provide services in Adams, Copiah, Claiborne, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, and Lincoln counties.
AJFC is governed by a twenty-one (21) member Board of Directors who represent the public, private and poor sectors of Adams, Claiborne, Copiah, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, and Lincoln counties. Each county being represented by three (3) members.
Our mission is to promote self-sufficiency for individuals and families of low-income communities through comprehensive services in collaboration with other supporting organizations.
